The Rogue Shanty Buoys are based (and home-brewed) in Lowestoft, and were described by fRoots magazine as "Guardians of the old songs, delivered with captivating authority." They sing sea shanties with an unmistakably bold and original sound, with an emphasis on strong vocals, tight harmonies, and unfussy arrangements ̶ delivering acclaimed performances with a fresh, dynamic approach to folk music that's seen them described as "a slightly salty Mumford & Sons."
With a hugely diverse repertoire ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day, The Rogue Shanty Buoys are as at home singing rousing traditional sea shanties such as "The Wellerman" and "Drunken Sailor," whaling arias, and tunes of ne'er-do-wells, as they are covering contemporary songs and '90s classics by the likes of The Spice Girls, Bruno Mars, and others ̶ each performed with their own unique "shanty" twist.
They have performed for celebrities across the UK and beyond, on high-end cruise ships, and on TV and radio ̶ featuring live on BBC Radio 3's Coastal Adventures, and Mark Radcliffe of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show has said: "Do you hear a little of the Beach Boys in the harmonies ̶ there's something outside of the regular shanty sound there for sure.
On Sunday 6th June, the Buoys in their full line up will drop anchor at The Seagull to bring a full live show to the theatre for one night only.
Expect six-part harmonies, the strong possibility of hearing Britney Spears as she was always meant to be sung and absolutely no sense of restraint. The group promise centuries-old songs made to sound brand new, and chart hits performed so convincingly sung as shanties youʼll swear they were written two hundred years ago.
