John Hales was so much more than a manager of the Seagull Theatre. He was the beating heart. An actor, writer, director, and above all, a passionate friend and believer in the power of storytelling. He dedicated countless hours to keeping creativity alive in Lowestoft. At a time when the theatre faced the very real threat of closing John stood firm. Through determination, vision and an unrelenting love for the arts he helped ensure The Seagull’s doors stayed open. Not just as a building but as a place where voices could be heard and stories could be shared.

Those who worked with him, knew him, and loved him will remember his warmth, his kindness, his thunderous laughter and the way he encouraged others to believe in themselves.

Those who watched his work will remember the honesty and depth he brought to everything he touched. His legacy isn’t just in the productions he created but in the lives he shaped and the theatre and community he helped hold together. John will be forever missed and never forgotten.
