Pushing the boundaries of traditional folk music to create a new sound rooted in the musical heritage of Cornwall, The Rowan Tree are Laura Garcia (flute, piano, vocals), Richard Trethewey (vocals, violin), Tom Fosten (guitar), Neal Jolly (bass, whistles) and Richard Morgan (drums).
The band members bonded musically during a trip to Ireland in 2017 at the Pan Celtic Festival and when they returned to Cornwall The Rowan Tree was born, creating sets of traditional and original tunes and writing songs.
They recorded their first, eponymous, EP in 2018 and returned to Ireland where they claimed second place in the Pan Celtic International Song Contest and later that year became the first Cornish act to win the Liet International Song Contest with their song “Tresor.”
2019 saw the group working on an original multi media work, “Kolar’s Gold”, funded by the Arts Council and Cornwall Heritage Trust. It tells the story of Cornish miners and their Indian counterparts at the Kolar gold fields and this will be the centrepiece of their performance at the Seagull.
Honoured with a Gorsedh Kernow award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Cornish Music’ 2019
